Contractor SEO: What It Actually Takes to Rank

No jargon, no vague promises. What contractor SEO actually involves, what it costs, how long it takes, and whether you can do it yourself before you pay anyone.

I will check your current setup against everything on this page and tell you exactly where you stand. No obligation.

Contractor SEO is the work of getting a contracting business to appear when someone nearby searches for the service you offer. It centers on your Google Business Profile, consistent business details, reviews, and pages built for each service and area you actually serve.

The real checklist

What contractor SEO actually includes

Every serious source on this topic lands on the same five things. Here they are, without the padding most guides wrap around them.

Your Google Business Profile

The starting point. Claimed, verified, and filled out completely. Correct primary category, real business hours including holidays, service area listed accurately, and at least ten photos of actual work.

Most contractor profiles are half finished. That alone puts a fully completed one ahead of a real share of the competition before anything else happens.

Reviews

Consistently described as the single biggest factor in contractor local SEO, ahead of technical work. Not review count on its own. Velocity matters more. Ten reviews arriving steadily over ten weeks outperforms fifty that landed in one push and then stopped.

Asking manually does not scale. Asking automatically after every job does.

Pages for what you actually do

One page per service. Not a single page listing everything you offer. A roofer doing repairs, replacements, and storm damage work needs three pages, not one paragraph with three bullet points.

Your service area, written out

Name the towns you actually work in. Not a vague radius, not "serving the greater metro area." Google reads specific place names in your content and connects them to local search intent. Vague language gives it nothing to match against.

Consistency

Your business name, address, and phone number need to match exactly everywhere you appear. Your website, your Google profile, every directory listing. A mismatch, even a small one like "St" versus "Street," quietly undermines the rest.

None of these five things is complicated on its own. What takes the time is doing all five properly and keeping them current.

Real numbers

How long does contractor SEO take to work?

Real ranges, not a vague "it depends."

TimeframeWhat typically happens
2 to 8 weeksMap pack movement starts, usually before organic rankings move
30 to 60 daysLow-competition local terms can start showing traction
3 to 6 monthsMeaningful results in most markets with normal competition
6 to 12 monthsRealistic for a domain with little history and no existing signals

Why the range is so wide

Two things decide where you land in that range. How much competition exists in your market, and whether your site already has anything working in its favor, existing reviews, a few working pages, some age on the domain.

A contractor in a small market with steady reviews already coming in can see real movement inside two months. A brand new website in a competitive metro with no reviews and no history is closer to the twelve-month end.

What moves first

Map pack results, not organic listings. If you check rankings weekly, the Google Maps result usually shifts before the regular search result does. That is a genuine leading indicator, not a false signal.

Honest numbers

What does contractor SEO cost?

Two real agencies publish their numbers. Here they are, plus what I charge.

ProviderMonthly SEO costWhat is included
Smaller specialist agencies$750 to $3,000/moOngoing SEO work, no website or follow-up included
Larger agencies$2,000 to $10,000+/moFull team, account management, reporting
builtbyjawad$1,500 to $3,500 one-time + $197 to $497/moWebsite, SEO groundwork, and automatic follow-up, bundled

Why I do not charge monthly for SEO alone

Most agencies sell ongoing SEO as its own retainer. I bundle the SEO groundwork into a one-time build alongside the website and the follow-up automation, because the three work better together than sold separately. A website with no SEO groundwork under it and an SEO campaign with a slow, dated website underneath it both waste money.

The care plan that continues monthly is for genuine upkeep, not for repeating the same setup work every thirty days.

By trade

Contractor SEO by trade

The five fundamentals hold everywhere. What differs is the search behavior behind them.

SEO for plumbers

Plumbing searches skew urgent. "Emergency plumber near me" behaves nothing like "kitchen remodel contractor," and Google treats them differently too, weighting proximity and response signals harder on urgent trade terms.

Plumbing ›

SEO for roofers

Roofing search volume spikes around storm events. A market that had a hailstorm last month sees a surge in "roof repair near me" searches that a quiet market does not. Content built around storm damage and insurance claims earns relevance a generic services page does not.

Roofing ›

SEO for remodelers

Longer research cycles. Someone planning a kitchen remodel searches over weeks, comparing multiple contractors before ever calling one. Portfolio depth and genuine project detail matter more here than for an urgent trade.

Remodeling ›

Construction SEO for general contractors

A broader mix of residential and commercial searches, often with a longer, more considered buying process on both sides. The fundamentals are identical. The content needs to speak to a wider range of project types and larger typical budgets.

Straight answer

Can you do contractor SEO yourself?

Yes, and it is worth saying plainly. Nothing above requires an agency. Claiming a Google Business Profile, writing service pages, asking for reviews, listing your service area properly, and keeping your details consistent are all things you can do without hiring anyone.

What actually takes the time

Not the knowledge. The hours, and the follow-through. Filling out a Google Business Profile properly takes maybe an hour. Doing it, then writing eight service pages, then setting up a review request system, then checking everything stays consistent, adds up to real weeks spread over months.

A fair test

If you have the time and do not mind this kind of work, do it yourself. If you have started twice and got distracted both times, or you know exactly what needs doing and simply have not found the hours, that is what you are actually paying an agency to solve.

Not secret knowledge

Everything on this page is public. What you are paying for is time and completion, not access to something hidden.

Learned the hard way

The most common mistake in contractor SEO

Building pages faster than you can make them good.

I have direct experience with this one. An earlier version of this business generated location pages automatically across dozens of US cities in one afternoon. Each one repeated the same template with the city name swapped in. Google indexed most of them and ranked almost none, because nothing on any of them told Google, or a visitor, anything specific about that city.

Thin pages at scale do not compound. Twenty genuine pages, each one actually about the place or the service it claims to cover, will outperform two hundred templated ones every time.

If an agency offers to build you fifty city pages in a week, ask what is actually different between page twelve and page thirteen. If the honest answer is "the city name," that is the mistake happening again.

days

How I work

I am Muhammad Jawad. I build the SEO groundwork myself, alongside the website and the follow-up system, as one build rather than three separate purchases.

Ten business days from start to live. You stay on the tools while I build it. The SEO part is not a monthly campaign that starts after launch. It is built into the site from day one: the Google Business Profile setup, the service pages, the structure that gives reviews somewhere to attach to.

Start with the teardown

Before you pay anything, I check your current Google Business Profile, your existing pages if you have any, and how your business details show up across the web. Then I send you a short video showing exactly what is missing and what is working.

Yours to keep whether we work together or not. About 90 minutes of my time. About five of yours.

Questions

Contractor SEO questions

What does contractor SEO actually include?

A Google Business Profile filled out and verified properly, a page for each service you offer, your service area written out by name, citations on the directories that matter, and reviews arriving steadily rather than in bursts. Agencies bundle these into a monthly retainer. None of them individually is complicated.

How long does contractor SEO take to work?

Three to six months to reach the top ten for a realistic keyword in most markets. Six to twelve months on a domain less than a year old, because a new site has no earned trust yet. Map pack movement usually shows first, sometimes in as little as two to eight weeks.

How much does contractor SEO cost?

Agencies typically charge $750 to $10,000 a month for ongoing SEO alone, depending on scope and market. I bundle SEO into the same package as the website and follow-up automation, starting at $1,500 one-time plus a care plan from $197 a month, because the three work better built together than bought separately.

Can a contractor do their own SEO?

Yes. Google Business Profile setup, citations, and review requests are all things a contractor can do without hiring anyone. What you are paying an agency for is the hours and the follow-through, not access to secret knowledge.

What is the biggest ranking factor for contractor SEO?

Reviews, consistently, ahead of technical SEO work. Steady review velocity outperforms a large one-time batch. A profile with ten reviews arriving over ten weeks tends to outperform one with fifty that landed in a single push.
